We walked a few blocks to the market, but it took a long time. The market was the small local one (the big one is downtown) and had the usual assortment of things for sale but few of the little crafts booths.
We got some really cool popsicles made in town called Las Paletas. I can particularly recommend the Honeydew ones, almost all melon. Mmmm!
Avery got to play with some bubbles. T-Lou made his usual kid friends.
After strolling back, Phil had to work (he's under a lot of stress right now with some lab experiments), Kim and Avery needed a nap, so we decided to go check out the Country Music Museum downtown (I think the Web site is cooler) after stopping at Harbor Freight for a different ball hitch.
Downtown Nville
Did I mention that it was HOT? Parking was looking challenging since the Gay Pride parade was coming through, but we managed to find something cheaper on the street. The museum was imposing but utterly silly and $20 a pop, so we bailed and just cruised the gift store.
Then, being there, we decided to walk around, and that was some hot fun!
We ducked into trinket stores for cool downs, perused all the taverns with musicians belting their lungs out, saw the Gay Pride folks partying but, again, were too cheap to pay to go in. I especially liked the signs:
We made it for about an hour and then were glad to get into some AC in the van, though our ride home was a bit circuitous. The road signs demand special scrutiny and a prophetic or experiential knowledge that we did not have.
We picked up some pamphlets of cool things to do, but they were either not kid friendly or not anybody friendly in the heat. So, with reluctance, we axed the cave tours and the planations. Sometimes, the heat wins.
Babysitting!
We love getting a night of our own with Avery! So while Phil and Kim went to a BBQ for work and then a Kurosawa film, we had fun with our grandgirl! She went through about five minutes of "I want MOMMY!" and then had a great time, mostly.
First, we played hide and seek. Then dinner. Then a walk down to the creek again, suggested by Miz Avery. It was pretty easy getting there with A in the stroller, but the way back was a whole different experience. Granny lagged behind with the dog and stroller, while Gramps tried to keep up with the running, then sulking Avery. Finally, he valiantly picked her up and carried her.
By the time we got home, she was hot and cranky, so Granny took on the bath and night time challenge. There was a lot of screaming and carrying on, but after she was cooled down, we resorted to Dora for a while. TV. Yup, ya gotta love it sometimes. After Avery and I had cuddled and watched Dora, I read a few books to her (Green Eggs and Ham is a favorite, as is Blueberries for Sal) and we worked on sleep time for about a half hour. She was really good but did NOT want to sleep. Finally, Gramps came in and agreed to rock her, and she instantly sacked out.
Granny sacked out a bit after that, and Gramps kindly stayed up till the parents came home!
